What I Believe
QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Compare yourself with those who on the Lord’s Day hear nothing except the dismal sound of the world. What a privilege it is for you to hear the proclamation of the gospel!

Boxing Day

I had an email from one of my Canadian friends this morning, wishing me a Merry Boxing Day.

When it comes to Boxing Day, I seem to be a "Bear of Very Little Brain."   I can never quite remember what it's all about.  So, every year when it comes to my attention, I have to go look it up.

I confess I always feel a bit disappointed that there isn't a bit more to it.  I think I get it confused with the Boxer Rebellion and find myself wondering what connection there is between the UK and China, and why they would get a day off for it, and if Canada was largely French in the beginning why the French don't celebrate Boxing Day and how we Americans, who will celebrate nearly anything, don't get the day off to shop for new china or something. . .

And you may be saying, like Rabbit, " I don't see much sense in that."

To which I humbly reply, like Pooh, " there was going to be when I began it.  It's just that something happened to it along the way."

Rabbit and Pooh are two of my favorites -- it's easy to understand why! And I, too, totally don't understand Boxing Day...and why it's celebrated where it is and also why NOT in other places. I loved this post!

Boxing Day is The Awesome. It's also the Second Day of Christmas. Do you read Veronica Mitchell? She's doing a series on the 12 days of Christmas until January 6th! http://toddleddredge.wordpress.com/

The name should be changed to Acquiring Boxes Day, because all it really means lately is shopping.

People love to get their Boxing Day bargains. I think it's a lot like your day of shopping that follows Thanksgiving.

How telling that while things used to be given to the poor on Boxing Day now the focus has moved to selling things or sales on Boxing Day. I suppose it's the kind of generosity you can expect from materialistic countries such as mine. *sigh* Boxing Day is not about sales but sails to me. It is the day of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht race. I love watching it!
Happy Boxing Day!
