What I Believe
QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Compare yourself with those who on the Lord’s Day hear nothing except the dismal sound of the world. What a privilege it is for you to hear the proclamation of the gospel!

An Answer to my Rant of Yesterday

Yesterday I did something I very rarely do here at Hiraeth.  I posted a short rant on what I perceived to be a great literary injustice foisted on George Orwell's Animal Farm.  I had discovered that Animal Farm had been renamed Animal Farm: a fairy tale in the 50th anniversary edition.  This did not make me happy.

Today one of my ABC Wednesday cohorts, VP, from Veg Plotting left this comment:
'A Fairy Story' was part of George Orwell's original title for the book. He was being satirical even before you got to the first page!

It's one of my favourite books we studied at school here in England at the age of 14 - so it should belong in both the junior and adult sections of the library, I think.
Well, now, that's a horse of a different color, don't you think?  Knowing that Orwell himself used that title throws a whole different light on it and now I sort of get a kick out of the irony.

At first I was tempted to be embarrassed at ranting about this on the blog but after a moment's reflection I realized that if I HADN'T ranted, I wouldn't know and I'd still be annoyed.

Do you think Bill Clinton meant the same when he referred to Obama's rise as a 'fairy story'? ...:)

Oh, dear! I normally refrain from ranting on my blog but I ALWAYS refrain from discussing politics! : D

Good that you found out, Kim.

You know, one of the things Brian said was, "Maybe that was Orwell's working title..." But, as I say, he was very indifferent about the whole thing. Perhaps if I had called him at the library he would have taken me more seriously...
