What I Believe
QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Compare yourself with those who on the Lord’s Day hear nothing except the dismal sound of the world. What a privilege it is for you to hear the proclamation of the gospel!

Who can resist a book meme? Not me!

Kim tagged me for this book meme.  She knows I cannot resist a book meme so here goes!

Take ten books, and transcribe the fifth sentence from page fifty six.

In keeping with the 5, 56 thing, Make sure that at least five books are fiction, provide five hints, and pass the meme on to six other bloggers.

Ten books, with the fifth lines found on page 56:

1. "Then the scanty supply of food was distressing: with the keen appetites of growing children, we had scarcely sufficient to keep alive a delicate invalid."
2. "God's word in the Old Testament is his creative utterance, his power in action fulfilling his purpose."
3. "Somewhere else."
4. "Move the pen to the waist line and repeat the same motion to create the same form.."
5. "But because they have quarreled with the trees they are afraid of the woods."
6. "Brought yeh ter this lot. . .."
7. "The great work of art was made for the sake of all it does and is, down to the curve of every wave and the flight of every insect."
8. "So when the gospel is preached, it must e preached not merely as and invitation to experience life to the full or even to accept God's invitation."
9. "And when it was all over, he took up plow, harrow, horses, and all, and carried them home like a bundle of straw."
10. "God's apostle is the chief steward or dispenser of his mysteries, and is principally "required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful" (1 Corinthians 4:2).

Five Hints:

1. This author was called Jack by his friends. (hint for #5 or #7)
2. His forward to a reprint of a book has become as familiar as the book itself..(hint for #2)
3. This author just released a new book on Friday that is expected to be 2008's bestseller. (hint for #6)
4. This book was written in French. (hint for # 3)
5. Two brothers wrote this collection of stories. (hint for #9)

Six I've tagged:

Allyson

Heidi

Angie

Liz

Kathy (my non-blogging sister; OK, I know.  I'm a rebel.)

John (my blogging son)

(Should you decide to accept this assignment, be forewarned; not every book you pick up will have 5 sentences on page 56.  You will have to re-shelve more than 10 books.  You might be tempted to start reading more than one of the books you perused, even though you may have more books than you have time to read already started. . .I'm just saying. . .)

Reader Comments (6)

I used your #2 on my list so I have an unfair advantage guessing that one.

I have a sentence that Jack wrote, too, but it's not the same as either of yours.

I am guessing Jane Eyre for #1. Yep! Jane Eyre it is!

And I think I know 3, too, but apparently your edition is paged differently than mine.Mine is the 20th anniversary edition. I lent my first copy and never got it back.

Number 2 is most certainly from Dr. Packer's Magnum Opus. (I verified it in my copy. We must have the same printing.)

Does your clue refer to his introduction of Richard Baxter's Christian Directory? No, that's not the one.

Okay, then #3 is Les Miserables!

Yes, quote #3 is from Les Miserables. The third hint is from the 20th edition of a book that is not Les Mis. Sorry for the confusion!

Okay. I see you said 20th anniversary edition.... My answer, then, is wrong.

You were right about the quote; my mistake for confusing the issue with numbered hints. I shouldn't've tried to do this meme at the end of a long, tiring day! : D

Well, I guessed C.S. Lewis, but not the book and didn't get anything else! I have never been "tagged" before and have had and continue to have a busy week and a half. These don't have a time limit, as far as I can figure, so I will try this next week! Thanks!
