Compare yourself with those who on the Lord’s Day hear nothing except the dismal sound of the world. What a privilege it is for you to hear the proclamation of the gospel!

A strange sight

Last night found me sitting comfortably in my reading chair, texting back and forth with my son asking him questions about setting up my new computer.  My husband thought it was funny; me, of all people, who has always resisted new technology as long as I can, multi-tasking and texting at the same time.  I'm not sure he thought it was quite as funny when he had to upgrade our program to include more text messages a few weeks ago. . .

How about you?  Do you text?  Honestly, I don't think I ever would have cared to learn how to do it if it weren't for the fact that my sons communicate almost exclusively by texting.  Now that I've got the hang of it, I kind of like the simplicity of texting.

I have texted, and I agree that it is very simple and convenient, but I'm not sure I'm a convert. It's ... not talking! :)

Not a texter because, honestly, I can barely type! When Allyson and I chat on Facebook, my typing is so bad it is distracting to the flow of conversation. SAD- I resisted technology because I knew I couldn't cope!

This is interesting timing. Carla’s post yesterday is all about the problems with texting and ipod and cellphone distractions and dangers for kids. I agree with her. I didn't get a cell phone for myself and my daughter until she went to college. Now both of my children adults have them and it is very handy to be able to send a quick text to them. Less intrusive than a phone call in a busy day. They turn their phones to vibrate or off during class and will get back to me when they can. This is good for their nerves and my mommy side.
Hi Becky. I'll have to go read Carla's post. I do agree that texting isn't a good idea for children, but for adults who just need to send a quick question or reply, it's great!

P.S. I linked "Carla's post" with html, but it didn't take, so I will use the old cut and paste method: http://carlarolfe.blogspot.com

I have not learned this skill. People know they better call me instead :0)

I don't even have a cell phone, Kim. If you can believe that.

So no, I'm not a texter by any means.

I used texting when my husband was out of country and cell phone service was astronomical. I hated it. It's probably that I'm technically inept, but it took FOREVER for us to say one thing to each other, even with abbreviating.

Texting isn't my preferred method of communicating ... I'm more an email & instant message type ... but I have a couple of friends (older than me! so mid-40's) who text exclusively ... therefore, I need to "speak their language!"

I only started texting when Paula left for college because that is mostly how she communicates with me.

All that technology......! My head hurts. But it's fun when you finally learn how to use it.

Don't even own a cell phone here either Kim - or a mobile as we call them :-)

I like texting...but I'm terrible at it! It's great when you just need to let someone know something real quick and they aren't answering their phone. It's a very handy device that's for sure!

My wife has a cell phone, but I don't think they had texting when it was made...

Yeah, I text - some:
1. When I ask Mr Right to buy something. If I say it over the phone he either misunderstands or forgets it. Texting leaves a "document".
2. When I want my kids to know something when they leave the school: They'll get my message when they turn on their phones after the classes.
3. When someone is travelling. Texting is cheaper than international phone calls.
4. When I have just a quick announcement that doesn't really require an answer. Usually I find texted questions stupid - if you need an answer please phone, so that the issue can be solved right there and then with no need to text back and forth.
5. When I have to communicate but I don't want to socialise. That is, when I'm in a hermit mood and don't want to talk or especially engage in a lengthy phone conversation.

These are some of my reasons. But I really don't text a lot. Most often my reason for it is avoiding social contact so texting sort of has a bad label in my world.

I have yet to ever text, although I could theoretically send messages to my husband's cell phone from the computer.

Don't have a cell phone so I don't text. But I do gmail chatting - and facebook chatting occasionally. I prefer to talk though.
